There is a lot of information and advice available for parents. How do we know what's best for our child? There
are many good books on parenting, and it is often overwhelming just to peruse the multitude of titles in the bookstores, or on-line.
One way to look at the issue of parenting is to consider the goals you have for raising your family. Do you want your children to be well behaved and obedient? While this may look good for you, it may not be in your children's best interest!
Instead, here are some skills you may want to nurture in your children:
trust
their own feelings and perceptions
have
a sense of personal dignity
develop
effective decision-making skills
take
responsibility for their own actions
feel
secure
demonstrate
respect for others
cooperate
with limits and rules
cope
effectively with anger and other strong emotions
solve interpersonal problems so that everyone wins
Many
parents seek information about parenting when they are faced with some
kind of behavior challenge like tantrums, toilet training, talking
back, lying or stealing. What if, instead, we look at parenting
proactively, by considering our goals and the skills we want to instill
in our children as they grow up?
